Psychotherapist in Brooklyn, New York

Kelli Knabe

licensed clinical social worker

psychotherapist / supervisor / consultant

I am a licensed clinical social worker, LCSW-R, and have been practicing for nearly twenty years.

I completed my graduate studies at New York University in 2003 and have continued to seek further training at various institutions including The Ackerman Institute for the Family, The Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, New York University Postgraduate Training Program and with Karen Alter-Reid, PhD in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).  I have been in private practice since 2005.

Since entering the field in the late 90s, I have been committed to working with adolescents and their families to address learning, emotional, and social barriers to success. I began working in domestic violence shelters with Safe Horizon, and then moved into New York City public high schools, namely Harvey Milk High School and Leaders. My work with adults at the Institute for Human Identity and in addiction treatment centers has helped me hone my understanding of how complex our struggles can be and how many resources we have access to, both within and around us.

I am a student and a client as well -- I will never stop asking questions and seeking to understand myself and my place in the world.

And finally, I have been a teacher of social work through my positions as adjunct professor, advisor, and field instructor at Columbia University School of Social Work.

My approach to therapy is empathic, engaged, and collaborative.

In a safe and nurturing environment, you and I will work together to explore what may be holding you back from living a fulfilling, satisfying life. Together we will seek solutions which will lead to the kind of positive change you are seeking. If you are experiencing anxiety or depression; feel stuck or confused about your career or personal relationships; or are otherwise unable to achieve important life goals, together we can find ways for you to gain clarity, become unstuck, and move forward.

I am a psychotherapist working at Metropolitan Center for Mental Health and in private practice. I hold a master’s degree in clinical social work from the NYU Silver School of Social Work and have also earned a Master of Studies in Law from Yale Law School. My life experience includes working as a professional dancer, as a journalist, and as a parent coach.

I welcome clients of all ages, sexual orientations, and gender identities and from all backgrounds. My extensive and varied life experience, along with my training, informs my approach to you as the client and your specific needs.
